Baby Birds

A couple weeks ago, Tony discovered that a cardinal had made a nest underneath the slide at the bottom.  We didn't know that cardinals ever nested on the ground!  It had four little eggs in it.  So cute!  Madi made it a point to go check on the nest regularly.  Well this is what she found when she checked it Saturday morning.  One of our little friends from the woods behind our house must have been hungry.  She was devastated!  She cried and never quite got over it that day.
I think today may have made up for it though.  I have 4 ferns hanging on the front porch that I can't easily reach to water.  Tony hasn't had a chance to hang them lower for me yet.  He was home this morning due to an appointment he had, so I asked him to help me water them.  Little finches have enjoyed playing in them ever since we put them up.  I noticed while pruning roses yesterday that one fern was smashed down a lot more than the others and a bird kept flying out whenever I got near that bush.  Tony pulled it down to check before we watered it.  Good thing he did!!  He found 5 little baby birds in there.  Madi was so excited to see them!  Tiny little birdees - YIPEE!  I keep trying to catch a picture of the mama in the fern, but she flies away when I come to the window.  I'll catch her soon though!

  1. We had robins in our hanging flower baskets last year. One day I went to water them and the babies jumped out of the nest to the ground before they were ready to fly and we couldn't get them back in the nest...I was so afraid that they were going to get hurt, since we never saw them again. Hopefully you have better luck. Now I know not to worry about watering when there are little birdies, not worth them jumping out of the nest?! ;-)
